After seeing his York University Lions football teammate
Matt Dean selected in the 2023 CFL Draft last week,
Gabriel Appiah-Kubi will now join a growing list of Lions alumni in the CFL. He was one of five free agents signed by the Edmonton Elks over the weekend.
Â
Appiah-Kubi turned heads at the 2023 CFL invitational combine, presented by New Era, earlier this offseason. He topped the leaderboard in the 40-yard dash, the vertical jump, and the broad jump while placing in a tie for second in the short shuffle.
Â
That earned him an invite to the main combine, and got him on the draft watchlists of many in the Canadian pro football circle.
Â
The receiver from Brampton, Ont., has played 22 games of U SPORTS football over the last three seasons at York, totalling 26 catches, including a team-leading 13 in 2021.
Â
Joining Appiah-Kubi in the latest group of free agents to join Edmonton is their 65
th overall pick Derek Best, and Americans Tony Gray, Quan Harrison and Ja'Darius Woods.
Â
The Elks begin 2023 play on Sunday, June 11, when they take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina, Sask. The Roughriders are the other CFL team to take on a Lion this offseason, after selecting Lions captain Dean in the second round.
