The York University Lions men's soccer team continued their unbeaten streak after defeating the Western Mustangs 1-0 in tough battle on Friday night. A game of key defensive plays set the tone, however the Lions would emerge victorious, emphasizing their place at the top of the OUA West table.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game started fast with both attacking sides providing good scoring opportunities. The Lions utilized the speed and skill of Pedro Apparicio, as he drove the offensive push throughout the first-half.
- The Lions continued their attacking push through the second half, as Matthew Mollicola found the ball at his foot just outside of the box, rocketing it right past Dino Bontis, for a bar-down goal to put the Lions ahead 1-0.
- After a disallowed goal to the Lions in the 85th minute, the Mustangs started the play quick and looked to capitalize on a shot just outside of the 18-yard-box. Keeper Alessio Carbone made his biggest save of the game, denying a top corner opportunity and keeping the score at 1-0.
- In the dying moments of the game, Tyler Attardo slotted a through ball to the feet of Christian Zeppieri who was unable to get the ball past the sprawling Bontis. A quick counter attack from the Mustangs keeper allowed Alex West to charge through the Lions defensive line, however he was no match for Carbone.
