Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

LIONS FALL TO GAELS IN OVERTIME

The York University Lions women's hockey team was back at it in Kingston on Sunday afternoon as they battled the Queen's Gaels in the second of a two-game weekend set.

A win would bring the Lions back to within four points of a playoff spot, while the Gaels looked to all but dash York's hopes of finishing third in the OUA East.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The visitors got on the board first late in the opening period. A turnover in the Queen's zone ended up right on Julia Cuccia's stick. She drove hard to the net, and had her initial shot stopped. A mad scramble ensued on the doorstep, where the puck eventually found its way back onto Cuccia's stick, and she was able to slide it home to give York a 1-0 lead after one.
  • The Gaels tied it up about midway through the second on the power play. Queen's had the puck in the Lions zone for 34 seconds right ahead of the goal. Alyson Reeves had a great chance moments before, but was stopped point blank by Emma Wedgewood. It wound up back at the point, where Rebecca Thompson took a pass from her partner and fired a shot that hit something on the way in to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Six minutes later, the Lions regained the lead with a power play goal of their own. Moments after a 5-on-3 expired, Alexa Giantsopoulos ripped home her second in as many days, bar down on Gaels goaltender Alexis Jandciu to make it 2-1 Lions.
  • The hosts, however, evened things back up before the period was out. With just over 2:30 left, the Gaels were the beneficiaries of somewhat of a broken play. A bouncing puck in the near circle found its way onto the stick of Emma Michalicka, who let one go that beat Wedgewood upstairs. That marker tied it at 2-2 after 40.
  • A scoreless third period meant we were off to overtime. Unfortunately for the Lions, Queen's wasted little time finding the winner. Kelsey Dunn led a 2-on-1 with Reeves trailing. Reeves took a drop pass and had her shot blocked, but it went right to Dunn at the side of the net with a yawning cage, and she tapped it home to give the Gaels the 3-2 overtime win.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions prepare for another critical weekend with games at Toronto and home to Windsor next weekend. Note the game from Varsity Arena is a school day affair on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 11:00 am.
