In a quick turnaround up North, the York University Lions men's basketball team were eager to extend their win streak after defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday evening. In a Saturday night contest against the Nipissing Lakers, York's success continued as their carried out another victory 88-72 over the Lakers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions controlled the ball from the start as Evan Shadkami got the scoring started for York. Going on a seven-point run to begin the quarter, York's defence shut the Lakers down around the rim. Nipissing worked their way back into the game taking an 11-9 lead but York was quick to turn around and regain control, ending the quarter ahead 23-17.
- The second quarter was started off by the Lakers but again York won the ball back and got more points on the board. Shadkami led the Lions through the second with 11 points and the team was up 50-31 at half.
- A slower third quarter start for the Lions as the Lakers went on a short six-point run, but then Kevinko Mervart made a layup to stop the run. Elias Panagiotopoulos shot 3-3 from the free throw line and made 2-3 field goals to earn nine points in the quarter.
- Leading into the final quarter, Shadkami wanted to seal the victory by securing 14 points. Making four field goals, four three-point shots and two free throws, his shooting game was the difference maker in the last ten minutes.Â
- A 25-point final quarter elevated the Lions and lead them to an 88-72 over the home, Nipissing Lakers for back-to-back wins and their eighth of the season.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will return home to Tait McKenzie Centre on Feb. 2 to take on the Algoma Thunderbirds for a Friday night 8:00 pm start.
