The York University Lions women's hockey team hosted the Windsor Lancers in a game supporting YU Mental Health. It was a chance for the Lions to secure their seventh win and extend their winning streak following their triumph against their rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues, on Thursday. With a win, the Lions can position themselves closer to earning a playoff spot as the end of the season nears.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Throughout the opening period, both teams faced offensive challenges, with strong defensive play on display. Emma Wedgewood showcased her skills by saving all eight shots directed at her. The breakthrough came 15 minutes into the period when Kaitlin Teixeira scored, assisted by Sydney Paulson, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.
- The Lions focused on defending their lead for the first 10 minutes of the second period. The momentum continued in their favour when Alexa Giantsopoulos netted her sixth goal of the season with 11 minutes remaining in the period, assisted by Julia Cuccia. A strong break through the defensive line, Giantsopoulos collected her own rebound to find the back of the net.
- In the final period, action was relatively subdued, with Wedgewood's remarkable blocking abilities being a highlight. With less than 10 seconds remaining, Kaitlin Teixeira sealed York's victory with their first empty-net goal of the season, marking her sixth goal overall and securing a 3-0 win for York.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will face the Nipissing Lakers in a home-and-home starting with the Lions hosting the Lakers as they aim to extend their win streak to three on Feb. 2nd. Puck-drop is at 7:15 pm.
