LIONS SUFFER THANKSGIVING SUNDAY SETBACK TO GEE-GEES

The York University Lions men's hockey team was back on home ice Sunday afternoon taking on the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The Lions were coming off their first point of the season, earned via a 4-3 overtime loss to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Friday night. Ottawa, meanwhile, entered off its first loss of the season, at the hands of the aforementioned Ridgebacks, a 4-1 defeat on Saturday night in Oshawa.

The Lions wasted little time drawing first blood, pouncing on the visitors less than a minute in. Off a faceoff win in the offensive zone a shot from the point by Bryan McAndrews eluded Ottawa netminder Zach Dietz to give the Lions the early lead.

However, the Gee-Gees would tie it just four minutes later on a Marc-Antoine Seguin marker, as he raced in, cut wide and beat Matt Tovell to tie it at 1-1. Ottawa took the lead before the end of the period ended as Anthony Poulin set up Andrew Belchamber in front to make it 2-1 Ottawa after 20.

The Gee-Gees added to their lead with a pair in the second. First, 1:13 in, Belchamber potted his second of the day as he got in behind the Lion defence and beat Tovell high glove. Then, with just 14 seconds left in the middle frame, a back-breaker from Mathieu Desgagnes on the power play made it 4-1 in favour of the visitors.

Ottawa added two more in the third. First, Belchamber scored his hat trick goal, driving hard to the net and sliding it through the legs of Tovell to make it 5-1 and signal the end of Tovell's afternoon. Then, Elliot Dutil beat Alex Chu on a short side shot to make the final 6-1 Ottawa.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions won't play another OUA-sanctioned game until Oct. 25 when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at 12:00 pm. However, they will head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face the Western Michigan Broncos in non-conference action next Saturday at 6:00 pm.
