The York University Lions women's soccer team traveled to London to take on the OUA West champions, the Western Mustangs in the OUA quarterfinals on Wednesday evening.
The fourth-seeded Lions came in off a solid 1-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers at home in the opening round of the playoffs. Western, meanwhile, came in off earning a first-round bye, having not lost a single game in the regular season.
The Lions battled the Mustangs to a 2-2 draw in London nearly two weeks ago in the second-to-last game of the regular season, making for an intriguing 4 vs, 1 matchup in the OUA West.
Both teams held firm as neither team netted a goal in the opening half. York's best chance at a to open the scoring came in the 39th minute, as a shot from York's leading goal-getter in the regular season, Nia-Fleming Thompson's, sailed wide, leaving the match scoreless at the half.
The match remained a tightly-contested defensive battle in the second half. Sabrina Fabiano attempted to put York on the board in the 77th minute, but the shot was denied by Mustangs goalkeeper Samantha St. Croix. York had four corner kicks in the final ten minutes of regulation, but couldn't find the back of the net. After 90 minutes without a goal, the game headed to extra time
Ten minutes into the first period of extra time, York finally broke the deadlock. In the 100th minute, Fabiano fired one home past a seemingly-surprised St. Croix, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. York would maintain the lead heading into latter 15 minutes of extra time.
The Lions stood pat in the second overtime frame, negating any chance at a Western comeback. A clutch save by goalkeeper Charlotte Phillips in the 114th minute off Western's Marisa Crane kept the Mustangs searching for an equalizer. From then on out, the Lions locked things down, allowing York to leave London with the 1-0 victory and a spot in the OUA semi-finals.
