The York University Lions men's hockey team played host to their fiercest rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues in a rare Friday matinee at Canlan Ice Sports. The Lions were on a mission to claim their first win of the season, having started the year on a four-game losing streak.
Toronto established control early, with Dylan Wightman netting the first goal on a power play late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead after one. The Varsity Blues continued their momentum into the second, adding two more goals, including a short-handed strike from Jacob King. That, along with a goal from Zack Smith, made it 3-0 Toronto. York's efforts to respond were stifled until the third period, when Mason Svarich broke through Toronto's defense, scoring twice in just over four minutes to get the Lions within one. The Blues, though, responded with a goal from Nicholas Wong to go up 4-2. York's Brandon McCartney later added a short-handed goal, narrowing the gap to 4-3 with just under three minutes to play. However, the visitors sealed the game with two empty net goals in the final two minutes from Owen Robinson and Ben Woodhouse to seal a 6-3 win.
LOOKING AHEAD:
York will aim to regroup quickly as they prepare to host the Windsor Lancers Saturday night at 6 p.m. back at Canlan Ice Sports.
