LIONS GO DOWN TO GRYPHONS IN PENALTY SHOOTOUT IN OUA SEMI, WILL PLAY TORONTO FOR BRONZE

The York University Lions field hockey team opened up its postseason and quest to make a third straight OUA championship on Saturday as they took on the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA semi-final.

The match was part of a return to a final-four format hosted by the Toronto Varsity Blues on the turf of Back Campus Fields, the site of last year's national tournament.

The Lions wasted little time getting on the board, as Katie Tye opened the scoring five minutes into the opening quarter to make it 1-0 Lions.

The score remained unchanged until late in the third quarter when Guelph evened the score courtesy of Stephanie Pomeroy. The goal came with just under five minutes left in the quarter, tying the game going to the fourth.

After a scoreless fourth, the match went into overtime. After that solved nothing, the game would be decided in a penalty shootout.

The Gryphons took a 2-0 lead in the shootout, before Kathryn Carlow got the Lions on the board. Carlow was the lone Lion to score, as Guelph took the shootout 3-1and advanced to the the OUA championship game Sunday afternoon.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will battle the Toronto Varsity Blues in the bronze medal game at 12:00 pm.
