LIONS ALLOW FIRST GOAL, LOSE FIRST GAME OF 2024 SEASON

The York University Lions field hockey team made the trip downtown to face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in a rematch of the last two OUA championship games. Both teams entered the game undefeated, with the Lions seeking to gain a leg up on their in-city rivals in the OUA East.

The game was a defensive stalemate throughout the first period, with neither team netting a shot on goal. The first goal of the night came courtesy of Toronto in the middle of the second frame, off the stick of Jayden Novak. The goal gave Toronto a 1-0 lead they would maintain heading into the second half.

The game remained a tightly contested contest in the second half. York goalkeeper Jade Lew put forth a valiant effort, recording four of her six saves on the night over the final two periods. However, the Lions could not find the equalizer, and Toronto was able to hold on for a 1-0 victory, which gives them first place in the OUA East.

For York to win the division and earn the top seed in the OUA, they will need to win out or have Toronto lose at least one of its final two games against the winless McGill Martlets.

LOOKING AHEAD

These two teams will reconvene on Sunday afternoon back up the street at Alumni Field in the second half of this crucial late-season home-and-home. The match gets going at 1:00 pm.
