Following a pair of tough losses on Saturday night, the York University Lions basketball squads remained in Ottawa, this time to battle the Carleton Ravens on Sunday evening. The women's team looked to bounce back and improve to 3-1 on the season, while the men's team was seeking their opening win after starting 0-3.
Women's Game:Â
The Lions kept pace with the Ravens early, but Carleton broke out midway through the quarter with a 15-4 lead, built largely from behind the arc, with three threes made by Carleton in the first. Turnovers quickly became an issue for York, with nine in the opening quarter alone, and the Lions trailed 27-10 after one.
Two bright spots for York were Ella Okubasu and Ruqaya Green, who contributed 12 combined points in the first half. However, Teresa Donato, Carleton's lead scorer, poured in eleven first half points to help Carleton to a 54-28 halftime lead.
The Ravens went on a 9-0 run to open the third quarter, setting the tone for another solid offensive frame from the home side. Carleton outscored York 22-7 in the third, to take a 76-35 lead into the final frame.
Offence was harder to come by for both teams in the closing quarter, but Carleton put away the Lions, 88-41, as York was held to just 13 second-half points in what was their second straight loss.
Men's Game:Â Â
The Ravens started out on a 10-3 run, marked by multiple three-pointers buckets that forced the Lions to take an early timeout. However, Nathan Carr, who was a bright spot in Saturday night's game, remained hot for the Lions. Posting five points in the quarter, which included a deep three ball, Carr kept his squad in the game early. A late Jackson Mackinnon-Metcalf three-point play also helped the Lions into striking distance at the end of the corner, only trailing 17-16.
Carleton rained down from three-point range early in the second, sending the Lions back on their heels. These were part of a massive 24-0 run that gave the Ravens a significant lead and deflated the Lions. York could only muster eight points in the quarter, going back into the locker room at halftime in a 53-24 deficit.
While the Lions had their best offensive frame of the night in the third, putting up 19 points, they still trailed 75-43 after three.
The two Lions players to reach double digits were Carr and Malakai Ayres-Olson, both of whom posted 11 points as the Lions dropped to 0-4 with a 94-50 loss.
LOOKING AHEAD:Â Â
Both Lions teams will return home to Tait McKenzie centre on Friday, November 15th against the Laurentian Voyageurs. The women's game will kickoff first at 6:00pm, while the men's tilt will follow at 8:00pm.
