York University Lions field hockey player Abby Thompson was the lone member of the Lions to earn be named a U SPORTS all-Canadian ahead of the Field Hockey Canada U SPORTS Invitational Championship earlier this month.
Thompson, a third-year midfielder from North Vancouver, B.C., takes home a national award for the first time in her career. She was also named an OUA all-star following the end of the regular season.
The commerce major, known as a strong defensive midfielder, put up one goal and two assists during the regular season. However, her biggest moments came in the biggest games for the Lions en route to a national silver medal.
Thompson scored the penalty shootout-winning goal in the Lions OUA bronze medal game victory over their fiercest rival, the Toronto Varsity Blues. She then scored the Lions third goal in a 5-0 whitewash of the UPEI Panthers in the opener of the national tournament on Oct. 31.
Thompson becomes the third Lion in as many years to win a U SPORTS all-Canadian distinction, following in the footsteps of former teammates Lexi Hannah (2022) and Natalie Winter (2023).
