LIONS BASKETBALL TEAMS DROP TIGHT WEDNESDAY NIGHT CONTESTS TO WARRIORS

The York University Lions basketball teams hit the road to face the Waterloo Warriors in a rare Wednesday doubleheader. The women were aiming for their third win of the season and looking to halt a four-game losing streak while the men were looking for their first win of the season, entering the night at 0-6.

Women's Game:

The game saw back-and-forth action, with York managing to keep it close early on, but Waterloo's defense and shooting ultimately proved too much. The Warriors led by 13 at the break, after outscoring the Lions 26-17 in the second quarter. Waterloo continued to pour it on in the third, leading by 17 through three. The Lions finished the game on a 10-0 run over the final 2:46, but the Warriors held on to earn a 70-63 win.

Kiara Leverage finished with a game-high 37 points for the visiting Lions, accounting for over half of their points. Naimh Heath supplemented that with 11 points, while Alexis Grewal posted 7 points. However, the Lions struggled to put the ball in the basket, shooting just 28.8% from the field. Conversely, the Warriors shot nearly 39%. Free throw shooting also proved to be a deciding factor, with York going just 11-of-21 (52.4%) from the line, while Waterloo hit 64%, as the Lions lose their fifth straight.

Men's Game:

The Lions had a strong start, leading 9-2 early and 16-11 after the first quarter, with Nathan Carr and Travon Hamilton combining to score all 16 for the visitors. However, Waterloo battled back in the second, outscoring York 23-15 in the second to take a 34-31 halftime lead thanks to strong performances from Waterloo's Cristian Craciun, who scored eight in the quarter and 12 in the half.

York came out strong in the third quarter, with Elias Panagiotopoulos scoring 11 points in the frame to keep his team close and give give them a brief lead, 46-44, late in the quarter. The Lions were down 68-59 with just over a minute to go in the fourth, and were able to trim the Warrior lead to four in the final seconds, but couldn't complete the comeback as they fall 73-70 after a Liam Rietschin bucket at the buzzer.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will bus up to Sault Ste. Marie to face the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon. The women's game begins at 1:00 pm, as York looks to get back in the win column, while the men's game begins at 3:00 pm, with both Algoma and York eyeing their first victories of the year.
