LAKERS TOP LIONS IN SHOOTOUT THRILLER

The York University Lions men's hockey team hosted the Nipissing Lakers on Friday night at Canlan Ice Sports in the second game of their three game homestand. The Lions are coming off a hard-fought 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of the Queen's Gaels.

The Lions drew first blood 8:39 into the game., Jayden McCarthy took a centring pass and fired a shot while being checked to the ice that found the back of the net past Reese Proulx, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Lakers would respond emphatically, taking the lead with two goals in rapid succession. The first goal came at the 13:16 mark, Harrison Caines hauled in a pass from Devyn Mayea, then took a slapshot that got past Alex Chu to tie it. Then nearly a minute later, Nipissing executed a three-way passing play around around a crowd of bodies, finished off by Charles Farmer to give Nipissing a 2-1 lead.

The scoring frenzy continued at the 15:47 mark as York tied things up. McCarthy scored his second goal of the game, this time with the aid of Brock McLeod, to tie the game at 2-2 through one.

York would retake the lead midway through the second period. Controlling the puck in the Lakers zone, Hunter Brown put it past Prolux. Keeton Oakley and Klim Georgiev drew the assists on the goal that Lions a 3-2 lead. Nipissing had several close shots on goal throughout the period, but Chu and the Lions held firm, taking their 3-2 lead into the third period.

A scuffle at the end of the second period led to some four-on-four action to begin the third. When the penalties expired, the game continued to be scrappy and physical.

With thirty-three seconds left in the period, the Lakers found the equalizer, when Charles Farmer's second goal of the night lasered past Chu. The score tied the game up at 3-3, sending the game into sudden-death overtime.

In the overtime period, neither team was able to find the net, despite both sides having some great looks, and the deadlock remained at 3-3 leading to a shootout.

In the shootout, it was the Lakers Kyle Foreman, Nipissing's third and final shooter, scored the lone goal to give the visitors the 4-3 victory.
