The York University Lions women's hockey team, sitting at 4-7 on the season, looked to make a statement against a tough 8-2 Waterloo Warriors squad Sunday afternoon at Canlan Ice Sports. They were hoping to recover and get back in the win column and halt a mini two-game losing streak.
The Lions killed off two Waterloo power plays in the first period, maintaining their place at the top of the OUA in penalty killing at 94.2% However, late in the period off a Waterloo rush, Kassidy McCarthy wristed one into high past the otherwise solid Emma Wedgewood to give the Warriors a 1-0 opening lead. Although having two power plays of their own and outnumbering the Warriors 12-7 in shots, the Lions could not find the equaliser in the first 20 minutes and trailed 1-0 after one.
The Lions killed off three more Waterloo power plays in the middle stanza and Wedgewood provided an additional nine saves. While York's aggression led to multiple scoring chances, they couldn't find the equalizer and were still forced to play from behind going into the final frame.
Still needing a goal midway through the third, York fended off a Waterloo 5-on-3 which lasted 42 seconds. With just under five minutes left, the Lions went on their own power play, but could not convert to tie the game. In fact, it was Waterloo who showed up short handed, as Nicki McDonald got a breakaway and beat Wedgewood to extend the Warrior lead and seal a win of 2-0.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will remain home on Friday, November 29th to take the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm, with coverage available on OUA TV.
