Coming off a strong three-wins in a row, the York University Lions women's basketball team travelled to Waterloo to face a tough OUA West opponent, the Laurier Golden Hawks. Hopeful to continue their winning streak, the Lions could not get their offensive connections firing early enough in the game, as the home side took an 86-56 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Golden Hawks came into this game knowing who to shut down on the court, and executed their game plan to lock out the Lions offence that has been impressive in their last few outings. Laurier got out fast taking the first quarter 25-11, as Kiara Leveridge secured seven of the Lions 11 points of the quarter.
- The next ten minutes was all Golden Hawks again as York's five different point scorers, led by Katie Leudy, were unsuccessful in closing the gap as the home side led 45-24 at half.
- Gabby Di Pietro came out with fire to start the third quarter, trying to get the Lions back into the game with her seven points, shooting 3-6 from field goal range, while Bilan Khadar's five rebounds slowed up Lauriers offence, but they trailed by 28 with only 10 minutes remaining.
- The fourth quarter played out similarly to the third as the first-years, Leudy and Di Pietro were the focal points for York, but Lauriers lead was too big for the Lions to shut down, ending the game with an 86-56 loss.
LOOKING AHEAD:
For their final weekend of the season, the Lions set up for a home-and-home with the TMU Bold, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 14 on the road, before capping off their season at home on Saturday. Tip-off for wednesday is 6:00 pm.
