The York University Lions women's hockey team returned home to Canlan Ice Sports to host the Laurier Golden Hawks following a challenging loss to the TMU Bold on Thursday. With only two games remaining on the schedule and the gap to secure the final OUA East playoff spot narrows, winning is crucial for the Lions with the Ridgebacks and Bold just two points behind.
York maintain their positioning in fourth with their loss against the Golden Hawks, but now face a must win game on Thursday when they take on the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, who are one spot behind the Lions, and just as eager for a playoff berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The guests wasted no time asserting dominance as Laurier's Hayley Szymanowski found the back of the net just 31 seconds into the game. The period unfolded with a series of back-and-forth exchanges, during which York's goalie, Emma Wedgewood, successfully blocked 4 of 5 shots directed at her. Despite Wedgewood's efforts, the Golden Hawks managed to secure another goal four minutes before the buzzer, ending the period with a 2-0 lead in favour of the guests.
- With Laurier maintaining their lead at the start of the next period, York was resolute in staging a comeback. However, when Laurier scored another goal, bringing the score to 3-0, York faced an uphill battle. Sydney Paulson's fourth goal of the season breathed new life into York's efforts, aiming to narrow the gap. Shortly after, Julianna Duma secured a goal for the Lions with eight minutes remaining, concluding the period with a score of 3-2, and York trailing by only one goal.
- As both teams entered the final period with confidence, Laurier's Szymanowski once again demonstrated her abilities by scoring a goal just four minutes in. Despite York's efforts to mount a comeback, they were unable to do so as Laurier secured two more goals, sealing the match with a 6-2 victory in favour of the Golden Hawks.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions remain at home as they prepare to face off against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at Canlan Sports on Thursday, Feb. 15th. Puck drops at 7:45 pm.
