The York University Lions men's basketball team travelled to the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Wednesday night to take on the TMU Bold in the first of a home-and-home series this week between the two Central Division foes.
The Lions objective in this one was twofold: extend their win streak to six while maintaining a shot at winning that log-jammed OUA Central. As well, from a historical perspective, a win Wednesday would have matched the Lions longest winning streak in more than 17 years.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Bold began the game on an 11-4 run over the first, but the Lions dynamic duo and York co-male athletes of the week Evan Shadkami and Josh Noton got the Lions back into the game, propelling them on a 15-2 run late in the quarter. That gave York a 27-20 lead, and they led 27-24 after one.
- In the second quarter, no team led by more than three until a Jallijah Grant three ball made it 46-41 Lions, and York took that same five-point advantage into the locker room, leading 49-44 at the break
- The third quarter was a dominant one from TMU. Lights-out shooting, to the tune of 13-of-17 from the field and 5-of-7 from three point range, combined with suffocating defence on Shadkami and Noton, gave York fits. The Lions were outscored 36-12 in the quarter and all of a sudden trailed by 19 heading to the final frame.
- However, the Lions didn't fold. They went on an 8-0 run over the first 1:35 of the fourth, cutting the lead to 80-69. Another 8-0 spurt shortly after trimmed it to a two-possession game at 83-79, Bold. Despite a Nickele Harris layup making it a two-point game with just over a minute remaining, the Lions couldn't draw any closer, and ultimately fell 94-90.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The final game of the regular season goes Saturday night between the Bold and the Lions beginning at 8:00 pm from Tait McKenzie Centre.
