LEVERIDGE POURS IN CAREER-HIGH 37 IN DAZZLING DOUBLE-DOUBLE DISPLAY AS LIONS THRASH THUNDERBIRDS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Friday night was Kiara Leveridge's game.

Everyone else just played in it.

The veteran Lions guard put up a career-high 37 points – to go along with 13 boards, five steals and four dimes – leading her team to a convincing 96-57 win over the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions led from wire to wire, almost literally. The only time they didn't was when the score was tied 2-2. From that point, the Lions went on a 16-0 run to take an 18–2 run to jump out to an 18-2 lead. They didn't let up from there, leading 30-7 after the first 10 minutes of action, with Leveridge posting 11 of her 37 points on the evening in the opening quarter.
  • It only got worse in the second frame for the visitors. Despite Leveridge being maintained in the second, held to only four points, it was the Lions defence that allowed them to widen their lead. While only putting up 20 points themselves, York held Algoma to just 13 second-quarter points and took a commanding 50-20 lead into halftime.
  • While the entire game could be affectionately dubbed, 'The Kiara Leveridge Show,' that moniker was particularly apt in the third quarter. The third-year star put up nearly half – 18 to be precise – of her 37 in the third. That accounted for 75% of the offence in the quarter for the Lions, who outscored the Thunderbirds 24-14, and led 74-34 through three.
  • Given the score, Leveridge only played half the fourth quarter, as the Lions cruised to a convincing 96-57 victory, running their record to 10-0 all-time vs. Algoma.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions now prepare for a rare mid-week home game, as they welcome the Guelph Gryphons to Tait McKenzie Centre next Wednesday, Feb. 7. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 pm.
