In conjunction with Ontario University Athletics (OUA), Ontario's sanctioning body for university sport, the York University Lions announced their 2024 football schedule on Wednesday.
York will usher in a new era in 2024 under first-year head-coach Dexter Janke. With a goal of "resetting the standard" of Lions football, Janke and his team will take the first step in what they hope will be a return to prominence in the OUA.
The 2024 schedule is detailed below:
- York will open on their bye week, before welcoming in the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Aug. 31. Ottawa went 4-4 last season before dropping a 15-10 decision to Queen's in the OUA quarter-final.
- Speaking of Queen's, the Lions will travel to Kingston to face the Gaels in Week 3. York and Queen's will do battle for the third straight season. As mentioned, Queen's beat Ottawa in the OUA quarters in 2023 after a 5-3 regular season, but fell to Western in the semi-final.
- Week 4 sees York return home to host the Windsor Lancers on Sept. 14. In 2023, Windsor put together its best season 2014, going 6-2 and winning a playoff game before bowing out to the Yates Cup runner-up Laurier Golden Hawks.
- The annual Red & Blue Bowl takes centre stage in Week 5, with the scene shifting to Varsity Stadium in 2024. The Lions will look for their first Red & Blue Bowl win since 2019 in a matchup featuring two first-year head coaches, signalling a new chapter in the Toronto rivalry.
- The Lions travel to the nation's capital on Sept. 21 for their Week 6 game against the Carleton Ravens. The last time York visited Carleton, alumni Alfred Olay returned a missed field goal 119 yards in 2022. Carleton finished 4-4 last season and fell to the Windsor Lancers in the opening round of the OUA playoffs.
- Week 7 pits the Lions against the Waterloo Warriors in a rematch of what was a thriller at Warrior Field last September. The aforementioned Olay returned the opening kickoff 110 yards, while OUA all-rookie Dane Yuzdepski scored his first OUA touchdown in what finished a 53-32 Waterloo win.
- The penultimate game of the year for the red and white sees the Guelph Gryphons soar into town for the annual graduation game under the lights at York Lions Stadium. Guelph has missed the playoffs the last two seasons.
- The 2024 season wraps up in Hamilton as the Lions travel down the QEW to Hamilton for a third straight year. The Maruaders finished 2-6 for the second straight season and are also looking to end a two-year playoff drought.
