MARCELLE ACCEPTS ROLE AS HEAD COACH OF QUEEN'S WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM

York University Lions women's volleyball interim head coach Shanice Marcelle has been announced as the new head coach of the Queen's Gaels women's volleyball program.

We bid her a heartfelt farewell as she embarks on an exciting new chapter in her coaching career. Marcelle has served as the Lions assistant women's volleyball coach since 2018 and has been the interim head coach since March 2024 during head coach Jen Neilson's leave.

"I'm so proud and happy for Shanice as she moves into the first chair as the Head Coach of Queen's University Women's Volleyball," said Neilson. "The amount of gratitude and thanks our program and myself personally have for her is immeasurable. Shanice has been an integral part of our program's growth and success for the past 6 years, sharing her passion, remarkable compassion, and the incredible human she is with our program, and we are so much better for it."

Marcelle's journey in volleyball has been nothing short of remarkable. As a former standout player, she left an indelible mark on Canadian volleyball. Her athletic career is studded with accolades, including multiple national championships and MVP titles. A University of British Columbia (UBC) alumna, Marcelle was instrumental in leading the Thunderbirds to five consecutive CIS (now U SPORTS) national championships, earning herself two CIS Player of the Year awards and being named the CIS women's volleyball championship MVP multiple times.

Her transition from player to coach was seamless, as Marcelle's passion for the game, coupled with her deep understanding of team dynamics and player development, made her an invaluable asset to any program. During her tenure at York, she played a crucial role in the development of the Lions women's volleyball program. Her commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team environment, along with her strategic acumen, helped elevate the team's performance to new heights.

"In my time working with Shanice it was clear that she is capable of accomplishing whatever she puts her mind too," said Alex Dominato, Director, Athletics. "She was clear with her goal and intention of becoming a U SPORTS Head Coach, and through her continued development through coach Neilson and York she has attained her goal. We're very proud of her accomplishments and wish her the best of luck."

"As Shanice steps into her new role as Head Coach at Queen's University, we have no doubt that she will bring the same level of dedication, passion, and excellence that she demonstrated at York. The Gaels are fortunate to have a leader of her caliber, and we look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of the Queen's women's volleyball program under her guidance."

Marcelle's time at York has left an enduring impact not only on the volleyball program but also on the student-athletes she has mentored. Her commitment to developing well-rounded athletes, both on and off the court, has been truly inspiring. As a coach, Shanice has always prioritized the holistic development of her players, emphasizing the importance of academic success, mental well-being, and community involvement.

"I am incredibly grateful for the incredible student-athletes, staff and larger community of York University athletics I have had the privilege of working with the past 6 years," said Marcelle. "I owe all of my growth, learning and development to the students and staff that have challenged me to pursue my best.

"I'm forever indebted to coach Jennifer Neilson for her guidance, and support - I couldn't have asked for a better mentor or friend to help me develop into the leader and coach I am today. I look forward to my return in November to battle the Lions!"

We extend our deepest gratitude to Shanice for her outstanding contributions to York University and the Lions' volleyball program. Her leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to excellence will be greatly missed. As she embarks on this exciting new journey at Queen's, we wish her nothing but the best. Congratulations, Shanice, and thank you for everything! Your legacy at York will be cherished, and we look forward to seeing all that you will accomplish at Queen's. Some final words from Coach Neilson, "Thank you, Shanice, it truly isn't enough to share the impact you have made on each Lion over the past 6 years, we wish you all the best in this great new chapter! You may have the fight of a Gael soon, but you will always have the Heart of a Lion!
