2023 was a return to form for the York University Lions men's soccer team.
After being eliminated by Waterloo in a shocking first round playoff upset in 2022, the Lions bounced back in a big way. Led by OUA West MVP, first team all-star and York male athlete of the year Christian Zeppieri, the Lions took their 16th straight division title, and won a pair of nail-biting playoff matches to reach the OUA championship for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons.
This year, the Lions hope for more of the same, as they search for their first OUA gold medal since 2018 and their first national medal since 2015.
"I would like last year to be a continuum to this year," said assistant coach Luca Forno. "We hope to match the same character and mentality with exceptional talent, familiarity and cohesion."
Among the returning stars for the Lions is the aforementioned Zepperi, who in addition to his York and conference accolades, was also named a U SPORTS first team all-Canadian for his efforts. Other returners to watch include OUA West second team all-star Kelvin Ramirez, as well as veteran goalkeeper Alessio Carbone.
Some new players entering the fold this year include Luca Accettola and Matthew Medeiros from Toronto FC II, and Manveer Gill from Scrosoppi F.C. of League1 Ontario. Additionally, Yigal Bruk of Vancouver, B.C. joins the Lions from Rockridge Secondary School.
"There's a big new core coming in, featuring both experienced and first year players that will have an immediate impact on the group," said Forno.
While winning and losing is obviously the top priority, Forno says a successful year for the Lions in 2024 will be one that prepares his players for the next level, including the CPL–U SPORTS Draft in December.
"A successful season is getting our players exposed and getting our players into the draft and onto the next level, while also having people graduate and finishing their academics," he said. "Community growth is also very important as we look to engage with high schools in the surrounding area."
The Lions kick off their season with a three-game homestand beginning Friday night at York Lions Stadium when they host the McMaster Marauders at 8:15 pm. They will then battle the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday at 3:15 pm.
