The York University Lions soccer teams faced the Windsor Lancers on a rainy Sunday afternoon in the back half of their home-and-home series. The women's team sought redemption after a costly loss on Friday, while the men's side aimed to maintain their lead atop the OUA West table. On the other side, Windsor's women's team was eyeing a weekend sweep over York, while the men's team looked for their first victory of the season and to play the role of spoiler.
Women's Match:
The first half was a defensive battle, with both York and Windsor playing solidly on the back line, making it hard for either side to get any real momentum. While both teams managed a few offensive pushes, the half remained uneventful as neither team found the scoreboard.
The breakthrough finally came in the 53rd minute, as Windsor's Kailyn Robertson netted the only goal of the game. Despite York's aggressive attempts to level the score, including several near-misses in the closing stages, Windsor's defense stood strong, and the Lions were unable to find the equalizer, handing York its second straight defeat.
Men's Match:
The Lions entered the match one point up on McMaster for tops in the OUA West. The game reamined scoreless until late in the half. The deadlock was broken in the 40th minute when York's Yigal Bruk, with an assist from Luca Accettola, put home the game's first goal just before halftime, giving the Lions a 1-0 advantage going into the break.
York came out firing in the second half, and blew it open. First, Christian Zeppieri doubled the lead 12 minutes into the final 45, and, less than a minute later, put York up 3-0 with his second of the day. Accettola tallied York's fourth goal just beyond the hour mark, assisted by Zeppieri, and three goals in under five minutes made it 4-0 for the visitors. Ryan Robinson added his name to the score sheet in the 72nd minute to make it 5-0, before a Windsor own goal in the 84th minute capped off a 6-0 victory for York.
