York University Lions men's soccer player Luca Accettola and field hockey player Elise Piper have been selected as the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 29.
Accettola, a first-year midfielder from Vaughan, Ont., scored three goals and assisted on another in two wins this past weekend over the Windsor Lancers. The kinesiology & health science major opened and closed the scoring in Friday's 5-0 win over the Lancers at York Lions Stadium. Then, on Sunday, he assisted on the opening goal from Yigal Bruk and found the back of the net himself in the 61st minute to make it 4-0 Lions and salt away what finished a 6-0 York victory. He now sits third on the team in goals with five.
Accettola and the Lions have the week off before returning to action Oct. 11 at Western.
Piper, a second-year midfielder from Ajax, Ont., had a pair of goals in the Lions dominant 5-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Friday night at Alumni Field. Piper, who, like Accettola, is a kinesiology and health science major, equalled her 2023 goal output in this one, following her rookie season in which she also scored a pair of markers. The alum of Pickering H.S. is one of just 11 players across the OUA to score multiple goals so far this season – among them teammates Katie Tye (3) and Elyse Ives (2).
Piper and the Lions are preparing to host the McGill Martlets in a doubleheader on Sunday. Games begin at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.
