The York Lions women's soccer team went head-to-head with the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday afternoon at York Lions Stadium. Following their win last Sunday, the Lions had their eyes on the next mission: to lock down the final victory of the regular season.
The Lions entered today's match with a 4-4-3 record, while the Thunderbirds had an 0-11 record. As the regular season drew to a close, this game was another opportunity for the Lions to display their strong offensive play and celebrate the graduating seniors of the Lions program.
As the first half began, the Lions came out serious about the job ahead. After the Thunderbirds had taken the opportunity to strike, the Lions took that and began their attack. Continuous shots from Lions
Sabrina Fabiano,
Dylana Makarowski,
Bianca Jack, and
Anna-Sofia Pinellis were fired without hesitation, putting pressure on Algoma's defensive play right away. Although many were saved by the opposing keeper, in the last five minutes of play in the opening half, a long shot attempt landed the Lions their first point by
Giuliana Paolella. This enabled York to end the half with a 1-0 lead and ample momentum.
During the second half, within the first minute, a shot was fired by
Seanna Caesar that was narrowly blocked. A yellow card given to the Algoma keeper led to a penalty kick awarded to the Lions.
Bianca Jack solidified the second goal of the night after the successful shot landed into the back of the net extending the Lions lead to 2-0. Nearing the end of the match, the offensive power prevailed as
Seanna Caesar and
Sofia Zebic both found the back of the net, moving the gap to 4-0. The Lions were comfortably able to hold down the lead for rest of the game, securing a 4-0 victory and wrapping up their regular season with a powerful win.
