The York University Lions field hockey team hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues on a rainy Sunday afternoon on senior day at Alumni Field in the second game of weekend doubleheader. Graduating Lions Gwendolyn Beauchamp, Natalie Brown and Jewel Lew were honoured in a pregame ceremony. The Lions came into this game looking get back in the win column after a goalless draw against the Varsity Blues on Saturday.
Katie Tye opened the scoring at the 8:52 mark of the first period, her sixth goal of the campaign. The Lions carried a 1–0 lead into the second half. Tye almost added her second of the afternoon, but was unable to get it past the Varsity Blues defender.
Just a minute later, Lew would extend the Lions' lead to two on an assist from defender Brown. Lew registered her second of the OUA campaign and in as many games. Brown came close to scoring the Lions' third goal of the afternoon when she received the ball from a corner and struck it toward goal but denied by Varsity Blues goalie Mary Yang. Elise Piper found the back of the net at the 1:07 mark of the fourth quarter, but it was waved off. However, the Lions held on to take the victory by a score of 2-0.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions' end the regular season at 7-1-2 and they sit atop of the OUA East heading into the playoffs. As the top seed in the East, York will meet the Guelph Gryphons, the West's No. 2 seed, in the OUA semi-finals for a fourth straight year. That game will happen Saturday at Warrior Field in Waterloo, the site of this year's OUA Final Four. Stay tuned to yorkulions.ca for more information on game time.
