LIONS FALL TO THUNDERWOLVES IN REGULATION

The York Lions men's hockey team looked to continue to get back on track and recover from a slow start to the season, on the road against the 3-3-1 Lakehead Thunderwolves, who they beat out 5-4 last night. This Saturday night featured a chance for the Lions to keep the momentum going against a competitive opponent.

York got the start they wanted, as a slapshot from the right wing off the stick of Bryan McAndrews was tipped by Keeton Oakley and past Carson Cherepak, putting the Lions up 1-0 less than five minutes into the game. The Lions were forced to a 5-3 penalty kill after committing back-to-back penalties, when the Thunderwolves found the advantage. Outnumbering the Lions, the Thunderwolves got the puck right in front of the net and launched a shot that tied the game at 1-1.

The Thunderwolves grabbed the lead early in the second period of play to make it 2-1 with lots of hockey remaining. The Lions dug themselves deeper near the midway point of the period, as an unguarded opponent stormed down the left wing and fired a slapshot that snuck under the blocker, putting Lakehead up 3-1. With just over ten minutes to play in the period, Lakehead poured it on off a fast break; another slapshot ripped into the top left corner of the net to make it 4-1, a score that would close out the second.

Neither side was able to generate significant scoring chances into the third period of play, as the Lions attempted to make a comeback. Both goalies would not budge in the third, with both sides having chances, and a 4-1 score capped tonight's game.

Looking Ahead:
The Lions next scheduled game continues the road spree, in a faceoff with the Guelph Gryphons on October 30th, 2025. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30pm, with coverage on OUA TV.
