The York Lions women's hockey faced off today against the Ottawa Gee-Gees to continue their double header on the road in the nation's capital. After 60 minutes of play, the Gee-Gees secured a 4-0 shutout win.
The Gee-Gees were able to get ahead with an early lead of 2-0 in the first period. Their success was fueled by a relentless forecheck that kept immense pressure on the Lions, forcing the Lions to focus almost entirely on defense. Compounding the Lions' difficulties, they took several penalties, allowing the Gee-Gees to dictate the flow and pace of the game from the start.
The Lions came out with renewed intensity in the second period, testing the Gee-Gees goalie with a shot on goal in the opening minute. The team's physicality on defense ramped up, leading to quick turnovers that helped clear the puck from their end. The Lions then drew a penalty, giving them a powerplay chance where they attacked the net aggressively, though expert goaltending for the Gee-Gees managed to halt the attack. Molly Battram showed high energy on the forecheck, pressing the puck offensively. However, nearing the end of the period, the Gee-Gees' speed allowed one player to break through the Lions' defense, sending a shot into the back of the net to extend their lead to 3-0.
The third period saw the Lions continue their hunt, keeping the pressure on and crashing the net for every rebound and chance. Despite their efforts, the Gee-Gees were able to secure another goal, further extending their lead to 4-0. The Ottawa Gee-Gees defense and outstanding goaltending held strong for the remainder of the contest, resulting in a shutout victory for Ottawa.Â
