This evening, York University's men's volleyball team received a second opportunity to take home another win against the Queen's Gaels.
In the opening set, a kill by Nikola Mitrovic put Queen's on the board first. That early spark set the tone, as the Gaels maintained momentum throughout the set. Although the Lions responded with several strong attacks, Queen's held firm control. Mitrovic closed out the frame with the winning point, securing a 25–14 victory for the Gaels.Â
York opened the second set with a strong offensive presence, getting on the board with a kill by Alex Dorling. The Lions carried that energy throughout the frame, keeping Queen's under pressure despite the rising intensity. A decisive kill by Alex Ko sealed the set for York, earning a commanding 25–16 win.Â
In the third set, Queen's struck first due to a York service error. That opening allowed the Gaels to settle comfortably into their rhythm and dictate the pace. Despite several competitive rallies, York could not narrow the gap, and Queen's claimed the set 25–16, capitalizing on another Lions service error.Â
The fourth set showcased York's determination, as a Gaels service error put the Lions on the board first. York used that momentum to shift the narrative of the match. Although a kill by Ben Carr tied the score at 20–20, the Lions refocused after a timeout and held strong through the final rallies. A Queen's service error delivered York a hard-fought 25–23 win, forcing a decisive fifth set.Â
In the final frame, an early attack error by Colby Soolsma gave Queen's an opening, but a subsequent Gaels service error evened the score. The intensity rose as the teams traded points closely through the halfway mark. After an attack error by Reed Venning tied the set, the momentum swung in Queen's favour. A powerful service ace followed by another kill from Mitrovic secured the fifth set for Queen's, 15–11.Â
Queen's left the match with a 3–2 victory. The leading scorers were Nikola Mitrovic for the Gaels and Chris Hoffman for the Lions.Â
