York University Lions volleyball players Yulia Glazko and Jasraj Nijjar have been named York athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 24. Both played critical roles in helping their teams earn splits of their weekend matches against the Queen's Gaels.
Glazko, a rookie middle blocker from Brampton, Ont., had five kills on 12 total attacks to go along with a solo block and an ace in Friday's opener against the Gaels to finish second on the team in points with seven. The next afternoon, the Cardinal Leager C.S.S., alum again finished second on the team in points, this time with 11.5. The kinesiology and health science student amassed another five kills, as well as five blocks (four solo, one assist) and a pair of aces in a 3-1 York victory.
Nijjar, a fifth-year setter, also from Brampton, posted a total of 75 assists in the two matches against Queen's, including 45 in York's thrilling five-set victory over the Gaels on Friday night, which put him above the 2,000-assist plateau for his career. He was also instrumental in scoring the ball, with a couple of aces and an assisted block on Friday night. He then put up 30 helpers in Saturday's nail- biting defeat while also collecting four kills on five attacks. Defensively, the sociology student had eight digs in the finale, one off his season high.
After hosting the Kingston-based Gaels last weekend, Glazko, Nijjar and the rest of the Lions volleyball teams will travel to the Limestone City this weekend to take on the RMC Paladins in the final matches of the fall term. Friday's matches begin at 6:00 and 7:30 pm, respectively, while Saturday's first serves fly at 1:00 and 2:30 pm.
