York University Lions men's swimmer Eric Ginzburg and women's pole vaulter Ella Foster have been named the final York athletes of the week for the 2024-25 season, for the period ending Mar. 9.
Ginzburg, a third-year kinesiology & health science major, put on quite a show at the U SPORTS Swimming Championships in Toronto last weekend, winning all four events in which he competed. The Toronto, Ont., native brought home the 50 and 100m freestyle races as well as the 50 and 100m fly events. He began his championship by winning the 100m butterfly with a 51.89 on Thursday, better than a half-second ahead of the second-place finisher. He then grabbed two more golds on Day 2, tying a U SPORTS record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 23.05 before winning the 50m freestyle in 21.80 seconds, The Toronto, Ont., native capped off the weekend with a win in the 100m freestyle, taking a close race by just two one-hundredths of a second.
Ginzburg takes his third York athlete of the week award of the season and fourth overall.
Foster, a fourth-year kinesiology & health science student, narrowly missed out on the podium in women's pole vault at the 2025 Biosteel U SPORTS Track & Field Championships in Windsor. The New Westminster, B.C., native finished fourth in the event with a top leap of 3.90m, matching her high from last year's championships and slightly improving on her bronze medal-winning 3.85m vault at this year's OUA championships. The fourth-place finish is Foster's best on the national stage.
Foster garners the York athlete of the week award for the second time in three weeks, after having the honour bestowed upon her following her bronze medal at the OUA championships last month.
