The York University Lions men's hockey program has prided itself in being a pillar of equity, diversity and inclusion in OUA men's hockey circles.
Leading that charge is fourth-year forward Owen Gilhula, whose efforts have earned him the OUA East EDI Award, first handed out in 2022-23 as part of the OUA's commitment to championing EDI initiatives in sports.
Gilhula, the former Sudbury Wolve from Stratford, Ont., has done extraordinary work in the North York community, including visits to the Jane & Finch Boys & Girls Club, and organizing the Lions annual Colt's Crusade Game. The game recognizes local para hockey player Colt Hagarty, who befriended Lions alumnus Michael Douglas at the restaurant he was serving at in the summer of 2022. Their meeting inspired the creation of The Lion Heart Initiative and the Colt's Crusade Game.
Following Douglas' departure from York in January 2024, Gilhula took the lead role in continuing Douglas' legacy, and has become an active ally and friend to Hagarty and his family. The kinesiology & health science major also spearheads visits to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Centre, helping to raise funds for the pediatric hospital through its Capes for Kids fundraiser.
Along with his work off the ice, Gilhula posted four goals and nine assists in 26 games. With still a year of eligibility remaining should he return for a fifth season, Gilhula has 24 goals and 29 assists for 43 points in 91 games as a Lion.
