York University Lions women's rugby player Lucy Boronka and men's soccer player Marco Sciortino have been named York athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 14.
Boronka, a first-year history student, scored two pivotal tries for the Lions in their thrilling 27-26 come-from-behind victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Wellesley, Ont., native, who is back with the Lions after last competiting with the team eight seasons ago in 2017, brought her time to within six with a score in the 68th minute. She then crossed the try line again with just over three minutes remaining to score what turned out to be the winning major after a conversion from Abbey Spiteri.
Boronka and the Lions head out on the road looking to make it two wins in a row Saturday when they head downtown for a date with the Toronto Varsity Blues. Game time is 7:30 pm.
Sciortino, a first-year commerce – finance student from Maple, Ont., had his best game at the OUA level, factoring in on all four York goals in what was a 4-0 win over the Windsor Lancers on Friday night. The former Vaughan S.C. forward scored three goals – his first three U SPORTS tallies – and assisted on a 58th-minute marker from Christian Zeppieri which made it 3-0 York and put the game out of reach.
Sciortino and the Lions will head back on the road for a match Friday night at Waterloo against the Warriors, before returning home to host the Guelph Gryphons next Monday at York Lions Stadium. Both matches begin at 8:15 pm.
