The York University Lions Women's soocer team wrapped up a mini two-game road trip against the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night in the twin cities.
The Lions were looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking last-minute loss to the Windsor Lancers. The Warriors, on the other hand, were looking to earn their first win of the season.
Lions keeper Rumaysa Kahn was called to action in the 2nd minute, making a save to deny the Warriors an early lead. Waterloo came close to opening the scoring again, but defensive efforts from the Lions denied them.
York registered their first shot of the game in the 15th minute, when Sabrina Fabiano was denied by a Paige Heide block. Fabiano got another chance at goal in the 22nd minute, and this time she converted it to give York the 1-0 lead on her third of the season. Fabiano nearly doubled her tally before the halftime whistle, but she fired wide as the first half came to a close.
Fabiano continued to threaten in the Warriors' 18-yard box, registering another shot on target, but was denied by a save from Warriors netminder Maeve Hagarty. She was forced to make another save seven minutes later, denying an effort from Anna-Sofia Pinellis.
The Lions maintained attacking pressure throughout the half, recording five more shots, before substitute Kyra Nasseri capitalized to make it 2-0 and help secure victory for the Lions.
York showed a world-class attacking display, registering a total of 15 shots, a great way to bounce back from the heartbreaking loss against Windsor. The Lions will return to York Lions Stadium on Monday evening to face the Guelph Gryphons. You can get your tickets here, or watch the game live, for free on OUA.tv.
