York University Lions women's rugby player Jahlesha Roye and football player Matt Linn have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period spanning from Sept. 15-22.
Roye, a rookie from North York, Ont., put up three tries in the Lions dominant 60-27 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues. Roye, a kinesiology & health science major, scored back-to-back tries to put the game out of reach early, putting York up 31-0 at the 16-minute mark. She then added her third and final score of the night right at the hour mark to put the Lions up 48-22 and seal the victory.
Roye and the Lions will return home to York Lions Stadium on Saturday night to host the Trent Excalibur in another pivotal match as the team fights for its first postseason berth since 2019. Kickoff is 7:00 pm.
Linn, a third-year quarterback from Waterloo, Ont., played well in relief of Keagan Hall in the Lions loss to the Carleton Ravens on Saturday. Entering the game in the second quarter, Linn went 17-for-22 for 266 yards and three touchdowns, including an 84-yard strike to Nicholas Adair in the third quarter. The engineering major also ran the ball four times for 30 yards, including a long of 15.
The Lions will head out on the road for the first of two straight road games, visiting the Queen's Gaels this weekend. Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm from Richardson Stadium.
