LIONS BLANKED BY MUSTANGS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT GAME

The York University Lions women's soccer team hosted the Western Mustangs on Monday night in the second leg of their home-and-home series. The Lions were looking to bounce back after a 3-0 loss to the Mustangs in London on Friday. York came into this game sitting seventh in the OUA West and looking to boost their playoff hopes.

York's first big chance came in the 4th minute when Alexandra Quaidoo made a run from the wings but shot straight at Western goalie Samantha St Croix. After a scramble inside the 18-yard box, Sophia Seville had a chance to give her team the lead, but Jasmine Broderick-Bobadilla showed good defensive awareness and position herself well to catch Seville offside. However, Seville would later get her redemption and score a goal in the 15th minute to make it 1-0.

Broderick-Bobadilla had a chance of her own when she dribbled from the left wing and shot the ball from a tight angle but struck the woodwork in the 19th minute. The Mustangs would come close to making 2-0 from a Reese Fowler free kick, but Rumaysa Khan did a good job to force a corner, Fowler would get another attempt a goal from a spinning corner kick Khan punched the ball out of danger. Later, Sabrina Fabiano had a free kick attempt in the 33rd minute outside the box but fired straight at St Croix. The first half ended 1-0 in the favour of the Mustangs.

York nearly scored when Joanna Adbelmalak found Quaidoo, but St Croix came off her line and outside the 18-yard box to pressure Quaidoo into shooting directly into her gloves. The Mustangs caught the lions on the counterattack but Jasmine Jack but her body on the line to block the ball to keep it 1-0.

The Mustangs did find the back of the net late in the game when the ball slipped through Khan's hands, but it was ruled offside, taking away the goal and keeping it 1-0. However, the Mustangs held on to win it by that 1-0 count and sweep York in the two-game series. With that, the Lions now stand at 3-4-2.
