ZEPPIERI'S LATE EQUALIZER EARNS LIONS A DRAW WITH MARAUDERS

The York University Lions men's soccer team hosted the McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon, less than 48 hours after defeating them 3-0 on McMaster soil on Friday. The Marauders were looking to avenge that loss, while the Lions were looking to make it a perfect weekend and earn their third victory in four matches to start the season.

Both teams came out aggressive and physical. Two yellow cards were given to York and one to McMaster prior to the half-hour mark. The Marauders Amir Shirazi had a couple early chances, both were off target, past Lions starting keeper Michael Williams, making his OUA debut.

Late in the half, Shirazi had another chance, but Williams was able to make the save and keep it goalless at the break.

In the second half, the physicality of the defence increased on both sides of the ball.  More tackles and blocks were delivered. A corner kick from Ryan Robinson presented an opportunity for the Lions to grab the lead, but it was promptly snuffed out by the Marauders. Both teams were continuously presented with extremely good defence, preventing any chance for either team to break the tie. Later in the second half McMaster's Velan Arol started the scoring with his second goal of the season, giving the Marauders a 1-0 lead. However, the Lions clawed themselves back to level with a goal scored by Christian Zeppieri, his third of the weekend, to knot it at 1-1 in the in the 78th minute.

It would stay that way through the 90 and into added time, both teams fighting neck and neck, hoping to break the tie. However, neither side could break through, as both teams earned a point in what finished a 1-1 draw.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will head down the 401 West to Windsor to battle the Windsor Lancers in their lone match next weekend. The game begins at 8:15 pm and can be streamed live, free of charge on OUA.tv
