The York University Lions women's soccer team returned home Sunday afternoon to battle the McMaster Marauders in the back half of their home and home series.
The two teams faced each other Friday night in Hamilton, a game won by the Lions 1-0 on a goal by 39th-minute goal by Sabrina Fabiano. Revenge was the goal for the Marauders while the Lions aimed to sweep the season series.
York came in aggressively early, applying strong defensive pressure that thwarted several attempts to score by the Marauders. This assisted in the Lions opening the scoring early at the four-minute mark, as Samantha Banfield found the back of the net to make it 1-0 Lions. Soon after, just shy of the 20-minute mark, McMaster levelled the score on a strike by Emma Fluit, knotting the game at 1-1. That's how the game would stay at the break.
York nearly took the lead in the 63rd minute after A long shot by the Lions Erica DiMatteo hit the crossbar, keeping the game tied. However, with time running down, the home side did storm in front, in unlikely fashion. A corner kick from Guilianna Paolella went off the hands of McMaater keeper Lucy Duffy and in. That made it 2-1 Lions in the 87th minute.
As the added time began, the Lions' goal was to run the clock and close it out. However, in the final play in game, Mia Paiement scored the tying goal. after a ball into the box was headed down right onto her feet. The Lions thought the play had been whistled for offside, leading them to stop playing, giving Paiement the opportunity to put it away and, in shocking fashion, steal three points from York and salvage a 2-2 draw.
