The York University Lions men's basketball team returned to their home court to take on the TMU Bold, looking to bounce back and secure their third win of the season after a tough loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues the night before.
The opening quarter featured a fast-paced, back-and-forth battle as both teams traded baskets early. York found early momentum through Nickele Harris who had smooth layups securing key points, while Nathan Carr knocked down a three-pointer midway through the frame to give the Lions a brief spark. Despite multiple lead changes throughout the quarter, the Bold came out on top, taking a narrow 16-14 advantage heading into the second.
York started the second quarter looking to chip away at TMU's lead. Jeremiah Kwarteng kept the Lions in the game with aggressive shooting, and Harris grabbed key rebounds to give York extra possessions, but TMU's defence and consistent scoring kept them ahead. The Lions were left trailing 39-25 at half.
The Lions came out of halftime trying to close the gap, but TMU kept the pressure high. York's Kwarteng and Jordan Nelson remained consistent with jumpers and a 3-pointer. These efforts fell short as York couldn't string together enough stops to overcome TMU's lead, with York falling 43-25 by the end. Despite York's hustle, TMU's lead proved too strong to overcome, even in fourth. The final quarter ended with TMU leading 87-71, capping off a tough game on home court but with bright spots from Kwarteng and the rest of the Lions showing grit.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Taking the tough loss, the Lions now shift their focus to the road as they prepare to face the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Friday, January 16th. York will look to turn recent setbacks into progress, with tip-off set for 8:00 p.m.Â
