Coming into Saturday afternoon's game on a four-game winning streak to vault them to 9-4, the York University Lions women's basketball team faced one of their toughest tasks of the year against the undefeated Queens Gaels, who came in at 14-0. That said, one of the wins in the Lions four-game streak was against the TMU Bold last Saturday, who came into that game 11-0. York was hoping to hand another OUA powerhouse its first defeat of the season as they continue to push towards their first playoff berth in three years.
After going down 8-3 early, the Lions battled back and went on a 8-2 run with a pair of threes from Katie Leudy and Alexis Grewal to claim an 11-10 lead. The Lions led by as many as three at 15-12 but a buzzer-beating three from Queen's Ally Smith gave the Gaels a 17-16 lead. Six different players posted points for York in the first frame, as the Lions hung right with the OUA's top team.
However, the Gaels opened the second on a 10-0 run, with the Lions unable to score halfway through the quarter. York managed only six total points in the quarter, four of them by Emmanuelle Felix, leading the team with eight in the half. The Lions found themselves down 33-22 at the break, needing to find a way to shut down the multiple Gaels in double digit scoring, Brooke Hussey and Kiyara Letlow.
The Lions did not get the start they wanted in the third, as the Gaels went on a 13-1 run in the first five minutes. York's only field goal in the quarter came off a layup from Marley Hayle, as Queens held York to just three third-quarter points and led 57-25 through three.
The Lions were held to single-digit points for a third straight quarter in the fourth, as the Gaels put an end to the Lions four-game win streak with a 78-34 win.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will return home to Tait Mckenzie Centre to face the Carleton Ravens in a game with big playoff implications on Friday night. Both games enter the game at 9-5 and tied for 5th in the OUA's overall standings. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm. You can get your tickets here, with coverage available on OUA TV.
