York University Lions volleyball players Quincy Johnson and Chris Hoffman have been named the latest York athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 18. Both posted similar numbers and were instrumental in their teams earning a pair of wins over the Trent Excalibur this past weekend.
Johnson, a fourth-year opposite hitter from Vancouver, B.C., had an efficient weekend offensively for the Lions, amassing 17 kills over two matches on just 42 total attacks, while committing only five attack errors for a hitting percentage of .260. The cities, regions planning major who will graduate at the end of the year also shone defensively, with 15 digs and five blocks, totaling 22.5 points scored on the weekend.
Hoffman, a second-year outside hitter and the reigning OUA rookie of the year, led his team in kills with 11 in both victories over the Excalibur. He amassed those 22 kills on just 60 total attacks, and added two aces from the service line. Like Johnson, the psychology major and pride of Uxbridge, Ont., had just five attack errors over the two matches and also made an impact on the defensive side of the ball with 15 digs, while adding a pair of blocks.
Johnson, Hoffman and the rest of the Lions volleyball teams will play host to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday and Sunday, with the women's matches each beginning at 12:00 pm and the men's starting shortly after 2:00 pm. You can get your tickets here or stream the matches live on OUA TV.
