The York University Lions men's basketball team began a brief road trip with a matchup against the Brock Badgers in a rare Wednesday affair. Coming off a tough homestand that saw them suffer losses to both capital city squads, Carleton and the of Ottawa, the Lions were looking to get back on track in the second meeting of the season agianst their Central Division rivals in the Badgers, who entered play boasting a 12-4 record.
Nickele Harris scored five straight points from the field to lead the Lions to a 7-2 run to start the game, and Malakai Ayres-Olson added a three and an and-one play to keep their momentum going. However, the Badgers recovered from a cold start to take the lead, dropping four threes in the quarter on the way to an eight-point advantage, forcing a Lions timeout. With the York offence stalling out, the Badgers were able to finish the first quarter with a 27-15 lead.
Ayres-Olson and Georgi Stevanovic added threes in the early minutes of the second quarter, but the Lions were still getting outscored by the Badgers. Stevanovic added two more buckets from the field, and finished the half a perfect 4-for-4. The Lions held up in a much closer quarter, but still trailed 46-29 at the break.
Jeremiah Kwarteng finally got active in the third after being held scoreless in the first half, dropping a pair of quick buckets early in the quarter, and Ayres-Olson hit his third three of the game, reaching double digit scoring. With the Badgers still nursing a double digit lead, the Lions had a tough mountain to climb to get back in the game. A late 8-0 run from the visitors, capped by a Kevin Okeke layup, caused a Brock timeout, however the Badgers still led by 16 after three, 67-51.
Kwarteng broke into double digit scoring and rookie Christopher Williams hit a three, York's lone triple in the fourth. The Lions finished the game on a 7-0 run, but it wasn't enough, as Brock relied on their str first half performance to take this one by a score of 83-71.
