DOMINANT DEFENSIVE DISPLAY LEADS LIONS TO THANKSGIVING VICTORY OVER GEE-GEES

The York University Lions football team earned a thrilling 19–12 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees at York Lions Stadium on Saturday afternoon, using a mix of strong defense, crucial forced turnovers, and timely late-game execution to seal the win.

York jumped out to an early lead behind special teams and disciplined possession play. Kicker Nathan Walker got the Lions on the board first on a 17-yard field goal following a blocked punt by Ridley Mastin inside Ottawa's red zone, making it 3-0 Lions.

Ottawa answered with a 34-yard field goal by Zach Copeland to tie the game at 3–3. However, York immediately responded with a drive sparked by a 23-yard run from Caelan Gray-Stapleton and completions from Maurice Sodja to Jayden Shallow and C.J. Vincent. On the first play of the second quarter, York capped off their drive as Rex Walker punched in a 1-yard touchdown plunge, with Nathan Walker adding the extra point to extend the lead to 10–3.

Ottawa struck back midway when quarterback Josh Janssen found Devaughn Blackwood on a 47-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing kickoff, Copeland launched a 65-yard boot into the end zone for a single point briefly pushing Ottawa ahead 11–10.

The Lions countered late in the half thanks to a Blackwood fumble forced by Peyton Ryderwhich Kyle Symons recovered at the Ottawa 34-yard line. Sodja capitalized a few plays later, scrambling for a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:14 remaining in the second to put York ahead 16–11 at halftime.

The third quarter proved to be a tight defensive battle. Ottawa pulled within four points at 16–12 when a Copeland punt sailed into the end zone for a single point. Both defensive units traded stops throughout the rest of the quarter, with Mastin and Nathaniel Tyszkiewicz anchoring key tackles to deny the Gee-Gees deep in York territory.

York created critical separation midway through the fourth quarter. Sodja directed a 7-play, 43-yard drive featuring completions to Shallow and Vincent, alongside a key 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty against Ottawa. Following a timeout on 3rd & 3, Nathan Walker stepped up and drilled a 35-yard field goal to stretch York's advantage to 19–12 with 5:51 left on the clock.

Ottawa launched one final, dramatic drive in the final two minutes, driving to the York 39-yard line behind passes to Souleymane Camara and Emyl Gregoire. However, on 3rd & 3 with the game on the line, Janssen's pass fell incomplete, turning the ball over on downs to York. Sodja then took consecutive kneel-downs to run out the remaining clock and seal the 19–12 victory.

Mastin was a menace in the linebacking core for York, co-leading the team with eight tackles, including a half sack, alongside Tyszkiewicz and Ryder, who also had eight. Jaden Dicks was credited with the other half-sack. Maurice Sodja went 19-for-29 for 149 yards through the air, plus eight rushes for 51 yards to lead the team in his return to the lineup after missing the previous two games.. Meanwhile, Jayden Shallow also made his return Saturday after a two-game absence and was the Lions leading receiver, making eight catches for 77 yards.
