The York University Lions women's soccer team was on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday night to close out the 2026 regular season.
The match started with both teams going to the attack. A pair of early shots from Joanna Abdelmalak and Samantha Banfield were both off target. The Golden Hawks bounced back with shot attempts from Ashley Greco and Vanessa Dias, with Jessica Breda also taking a pair of shots. The first half remained scoreless until stoppage time, when Greco scored the first goal for Laurier to give the Hawks a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Lions tried to bounce back instantly with a shot attempt from Mia Aguiar within the first minute of the second half, but it was wide of the Laurier cage. Over the next 10 minutes, both sides committed a series of fouls, and possession swayed back and forth. York was still looking for their first goal as Jasmyn Clarke and Maia McConney attempted to find the equalizer, but could not, keeping Laurier up 1-0.
The teams made it through the 90 with Laurier still leading by one, but, in second-half added time, Greco scored another one for the Golden Hawks, her second of the night, to put it away for the home side. McConney tried to get the Lions on the board with a last-minute shot attempt, which was high overtop of goal, as the Lions dropped this one 2-0.
LOOKING AHEAD:
After clinching second place and a first-round bye last Friday, the Lions finish the season 8-3-1, their best mark since 2019 when they went 8-1-5 in a 14-game season, and will now prepare to host an OUA quarter-final next weekend.
