Two weeks after a three-goal third-period comeback for their first in of the season over the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo, the York University Lions men's hockey team hosted the Hawks on Saturday night at Canlan Ice Sports.
The visitors opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first five minutes. First, Colin Mound scored his first of the year 3:22 in, giving Laurier a quick 1-0 lead. Then, 51 seconds later, Aiden O'Toole scored his first of the year and, just like that, it was 2-0 Golden Hawks.
The Lions looked to respond before the end of the period, but couldn't beat Laurier netminder Andrew Ness, and trailed by a pair after one. The Hawks extended the lead late in the second when Bryce Sutherland put home his third of the year – and the Golden Hawks third of the night – making it 3-0 for the visitors. They would maintain that lead through two periods.
York got on the board early in the third, with Nich McKee put home a rebound off a burst from Jadon Iyogun, making it a 3-1 game. However, the Lions were unable to cut any further into the deficit, and Spencer Caines scored an empty netter with 1:29 to go. That sealed a 4-1 Golden Hawk win, as they take the second matchup of the season between the two sides.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions begin a three-game road trip next Friday in Guelph as they battle the Gryphons in the Royal City. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m., and you can watch the game live on OUA TV.
