Following a strong opening-night performance against the Toronto Varsity Blues, the York University Lions women's basketball team returned to Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday evening looking to keep its momentum going against the Nipissing Lakers. York carried its confidence from Friday's victory into the matchup, aiming to build on its early-season success in front of its home crowd.
The Lions established control early, outscoring Nipissing 13–7 in the opening quarter. York's offence found its rhythm through contributions from across the lineup, while the team limited the Lakers' scoring opportunities to take an early advantage.
York extended its lead in the second quarter, adding 18 points while holding Nipissing to 10. Gabby Di Pietro provided an offensive spark, knocking down three three-pointers on her way to 13 points. The Lions' defensive pressure also helped keep the Lakers from gaining momentum, giving York a 31–17 lead at halftime.
The third quarter proved to be York's strongest offensive stretch. The Lions outscored Nipissing 23-12 out of the break. Katie Leudy contributed 12 points overall and pulled down 11 rebounds, recording a double-double to help York maintain its control on both ends of the court.
The Lions ultimately secured a convincing 67–40 victory, improving to 2–0 to begin the season after defeating Toronto 74–53 the previous night. York's balanced scoring and consistent defence helped it maintain the lead in every quarter, giving the team another positive result to build on early in the campaign.
Chantelle Stuart finished with 10 points and a game-high nine assists, helping facilitate the Lions' offence throughout the contest. Eden Monka and Ella Okubasu also added nine points apiece.
