LIONS STAVE OFF LATE LAKER RALLY TO EARN FIRST WIN OF 2026-27

Following a tough start to the 2026–27 regular season, the York University Lions men's basketball team returned to the Tait McKenzie Centre on Saturday night looking to bounce back against the Nipissing Lakers. After dropping their home opener to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday, the Lions had an opportunity to finish their opening weekend on a positive note and secure their first win of the season.

York came out with an early offensive spark, building a 25–11 lead in the first quarter. The Lions limited Nipissing's scoring opportunities while establishing a double-digit advantage. Daren Clarke contributed a team-high seven points in the opening quarter.

The second quarter saw York extend its lead and put further distance between itself and the Lakers. Malakai Ayres-Olson connected from beyond the arc, adding to the Lions' offensive production, while Josiah McKnight helped keep the scoreboard moving with a combination of free throws and scoring opportunities around the basket.

At one point in the second quarter, the Lions held a 24-point advantage. Nipissing managed to add to its total before halftime, but York still entered the break ahead 46–27 after outscoring the Lakers 21–16 in the frame.

The Lakers returned with a stronger offensive effort in the third quarter, putting up 26 points as they attempted to work their way back into the game. Ayres-Olson continued to contribute to the Lions' scoring. York maintained its lead heading into the final quarter, holding a 68–53 advantage.

Nipissing continued to chip away at the deficit in the fourth. The Lakers found opportunities around the basket, putting pressure on York as the clock wound down. Nipissing cut the lead to three, 69-66, with just over five minutes to play, but McKnight made two quick free throws to extend the lead back to five and spark a 6-0 run. That brought the Lions lead to nine, and the Lions would hold on to win this one by an 82-73 final.

McKnight led all York scorers with 21 points, while Ayres-Olson added 20, and Clarke posted 13, giving the Lions three double-figure scorers.

York's work at the free-throw line proved particularly important. The Lions made 37 of their 48 attempts, compared with Nipissing's 24 makes on 35 attempts. York also recorded 12 second-chance points, doubling the Lakers' six, while both teams finished with 38 rebounds. Although the Lions were outscored 36–22 in the paint, their production from the line and strong first half helped them maintain control when Nipissing made its late push.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The win gives York a positive result to build on after opening the season with a loss to Toronto. The Lions will now head out on the road for their next two games, beginning with a matchup against the Windsor Lancers on Friday, at 8 p.m. York will then face the Western Mustangs on Saturday, with tip-off also scheduled for 8 p.m. You can watch both games live on OUA TV.
