This Friday, the York University Lions men's volleyball team travelled to Kingston to open the OUA playoffs with a quarter-final showdown against the Queen's Gaels.
The opening set of the match was clearly competitive right from the first points, with York trading points through the middle stages behind strong swings from Simon Oberbuchner and Chris Hoffman. Queen's gradually built momentum late, capitalizing on service pressure and timely kills to create separation. Despite York pushing back near the end, the Gaels closed out the first set 25–21 to take an early lead in the game.
The back-and-forth battle intensified in the second set, as neither side was able to establish a clear advantage deep into the frame. While the Lions struggled to minimize unforced errors, the Gaels remained disciplined, capitalizing on York's miscues to build momentum. Queen's ultimately edged out the set 26–24 to extend their lead, successfully weathering another late surge from the Lions.
The third set proved to be the most tightly contested, featuring multiple lead changes and momentum swings until the final whistle. York pushed Queen's to the limit with aggressive and consistent service pressure from Colby Soolsma and clinical finishing by Dennis Cota, yet the Gaels held firm during the closing points. With a 25–23 victory in the third, Queen's closed out the set and took the match 3-0.
