This Saturday evening, York University's women's basketball team traveled to Kingston for their quarter-final matchup against the Queen's Gaels. The Gaels have proven to be strong competitors all season, but the Lions came in determined, hungry and ready to compete.
Queen's opened the scoring in the first quarter with a three-pointer from Katrina Renon. Shortly after, York's Gabby Di Pietro responded with a layup, bringing the score to 3–2 for the Lions. York began to slowly build momentum. Consecutive baskets, a jump shot and a layup from Kiara Leveridge, gave the Lions the necessary push to hold the lead for much of the quarter. However, in the final seconds, Bella Gaudet knocked down a three-pointer to reclaim the lead for Queen's. The first quarter ended with the Lions narrowly trailing, 15–14.
In the second quarter, York looked to maintain control. Katie Leudy opened the scoring with a layup to make it 16–15. Brooke Hussey answered with a layup for the Gaels, keeping the game tight. After a layup from Letlow, Queen's began to seize momentum and steadily widened the gap. Hussey added a jump shot to extend the lead, and the Gaels pulled away significantly. The teams headed into halftime with York trailing 38–19.
The third quarter brought hope for a Lions comeback, but Queen's quickly dampened that momentum. Gaudet opened the half with another three-pointer, extending the Gaels' lead. Alexis Grewal contributed from the free-throw line and added a layup for York, but the Lions struggled to close the gap. A three-pointer from Mikayla McFarlane pushed Queen's lead past 20 points, with the score sitting at 51–30.
In the fourth quarter, the Lions had one final opportunity to rally, but Letlow opened the period with a layup that further secured the Gaels' control. Despite York's continued effort and determination, it was not enough to overcome Queen's advantage and they sealed the win 74–48.
