Playing the third of a five-game road trip to close out the 2025-26 season, the York University Lions women's hockey team landed in Waterloo Saturday afternoon, facing off against the Waterloo Warriors. The Lions were looking to snap a three-game losing streak, and do so against the host team for the upcoming U SPORTS championship next month.
The Lions dug themselves into a hole early, as Tatum James opened the scoring just 11 seconds into the first period, flipping the first shot of the game over the pad of Alix Walchuk, putting the Warriors up 1-0. Midway through the period, a perfectly placed wrist shot from the right wing off the stick of Carly Orth, during a Warriors power play, widened the lead to 2-0. York later went on a power play of their own, but couldn't do anything with it, and the period finished without the Lions being able to get on the board.
Waterloo kept the momentum going early in the second, as a rebound was put home by Adriana Pezzutti, putting the Warriors up 3-0. James added her second of the game just over two minutes later, sending a puck into the top left corner of the net, as the Warriors pushed to a 4-0 lead. York got another powerplay later in the period, but failed to capitalized, and trailed 4-0 after two.
The third period proved to be an extremely physical period, as tempers started to flare from both sides leading to 66 minutes in penalties in the third alone. The Lions went 0-for-2 on the power play in the third, and the Warriors took this one with a shutout, 4-0.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will travel to London, Ontario, to face off against the Western Mustangs on Friday, February 13th. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00pm, with coverage on OUA TV.
